Why Breakfast Is Important

You’ve heard it before, you’ll hear it again, in fact, you’ll hear it right now, breakfast is the single most important meal of your day. I know it, you know it, everyone knows it. And yet, we still eat things like donuts and cold pizza for breakfast without a second thought. Why do we do this to ourselves?

Now, I have a admission to make and you’re going to think I’m nuts. You’re going to ask why is she writing a post about breakfast? Why should I listen to her?

We’ll get to those questions in a minute…after my confession.

Confession time!

I don’t eat breakfast. Cue the shock and ahs. Go ahead get it out of your system, but whatever you do, keep reading because I can explain.

What I should say is this, I don’t eat breakfast at a time when most people would expect someone to eat it. I don’t believe the word breakfast means to eat eggs, pancakes, or toast and coffee within an hour or two of waking up in the morning.

I prefer to split this compound word up into its two parts and say instead, break-fast.

See how that gives it a whole new meaning? Breakfast is simply the meal in which we break our fast. After all, we have been fasting all night, right? Unless you get up in the middle of the night for a glass of milk and bread the way my stepdad always did, but somehow I doubt you do.

This now leads us to the reason why this breaking your fast meal is the most important meal of your day. It’s because whatever you choose to stuff in your face to break your fast can have a huge impact on how you’ll feel for the rest of the day.

If you start your day with a high carb, high sugar food, think donut or muffin, then not only will your sugars drop out in about an hour leaving you feeling tired and unfocused, but you’ll also be craving sugar and carbs until your head hits the pillow tonight.

Instead, begin your day(break your fast) with a nutritionally sound meal that will give you the energy to sustain your body through until lunchtime. Foods that are low in sugar, but high in protein and fiber are the best options.

Lazy Gal’s Guide?

Now you’re probably wondering why I’m calling this the Lazy Gal’s Guide to a Better Breakfast?

Well the “Lazy Gal” I’m referring to is me, but since you’re reading this, it’s you too. Don’t feel bad about it either, I sure don’t.

It just means that we like to keep things simple.  We don’t want things to be complicated or take a bunch of time or require tons of ingredients. The better part means we know it’s important to eat healthily, but maybe we have a bit of trouble figuring out what that looks like.

That’s why I created this guide. Well, that and because September inspired me to do so.

Now let’s stop jacking our jaw and get down to the good stuff.

7 Quick and Healthy Better Breakfasts

…for the Lazy Gal in all of us.

PB & Banana Overnight Oats

These overnight oats are easy to make and ready to eat the next morning. You can make a few days at a time if you don’t mind eating them more than once. This is a great way to use up ingredients so you don’t waste those delicious bananas! Overnight oats are a great base and the flavor combinations are seemingly endless. Check out Pinterest for even more flavor combinations!

Smoothie Bowls

These smoothie bowls are packed with nutrition and taste amazing! All you need is 5 ingredients and 5 minutes from start to delicious!

Open-Faced Egg Toast – 10 ways

Avocado toast is one of the best meals you can eat! It’s packed full of protein and good for you heart healthy fats(monounsaturated). Pair it with a whole grain seed bread like Dave’s Killer Bread and you’ve created the perfect well balanced meal. Check out these variations on the original avocado toast to switch things up a bit.

Yogurt Parfaits

Who doesn’t love a fruit and yogurt parfait? This one’s vegan because that’s what I like, but honestly, you can use any yogurt you choose. Be careful when picking out yogurt though, many popular brands are mostly sugar. Pair your yogurt with some fresh or frozen fruit(or canned peaches, yum!), top with a delicious granola, and you’re all set.

Baked Oatmeal Cups

Omg! These oatmeal cups are amazing! I especially love the orange cranberry and peanut butter banana. The best part about these cups is they can be made ahead of time and stored in the freezer to use later. I suggest making a double batch so you’ll only have to make them once a month.

Nut Butter & Fruit Wrap Up

Wraps are a super-easy way to get all the nutrition you need to start your day right. Just take a tortilla or flatbread, spread your favorite nut or seed butter on it, then fill it with fresh fruit or jam, add some granola or nuts for crunch(or use crunchy nut butter), roll it up, and go.

Avocado Egg Cups

Hopefully, you like avocados because they are so good for you and are a perfect way to break your fast. These are so easy to make, especially in the air fryer, but if you don’t have an air fryer yet(why not?), you can make these in the oven too. Top with anything you like from everything bagel seasoning and tomatoes to bacon and cheese(although use these sparingly, these are supposed to be healthy).

Oh yeah, by the way, there are seven ideas because there are seven days in a week, so you have a perfectly better breakfast plan for each day, you’re welcome!

Plus, I get bored with having the same food every day, variety is the spice of life and all that.

Recap

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but maybe for a different reason than you thought. It’s important because it is the first thing you will ingest after you have been fasting all night.

What you eat to break that fast is extremely important as well. Break it with sugar and you’ll suffer from low energy and a cranky disposition. Start with a well-balanced meal that is high in fiber and protein, you’ll feel great and be at your best.

Since trying to plan out a healthy meal can sometimes be challenging for us not so easily motivated types, this Lazy Gal’s Guide to a Better Breakfast is a perfect way to ensure we get the nutrition we need to thrive.
