Psychology Behind Colors and Moods
Color Psychology is “the study of hues as a determinant of human behavior.” Say what? That’s just a fancy way of saying it’s the study of how colors affect how we humans think or feel when presented with a particular color.
I mean it makes sense.
Think about the color you love. Ask yourself, what is it about that color you like so much? Does it put a smile on your face? Does it invoke a sense of wellness or happiness? Maybe it reminds you of a joyous time from your past?
Whatever it is, that color can take you to that peaceful place when you see it.
What about a color you don’t like? Why don’t you like it? Does it make you feel bad or angry or maybe sad?
It’s nuts to think that colors can have such an influential effect on our emotions or is it?
That’s pretty powerful stuff!
Do you believe it or not?
So we’ve established that colors are pretty powerful and amazing! Could you imagine a world without color? I don’t even want to think about it.
Also, we talked briefly about what colors you like and those you don’t, but have you ever thought about what it is about a color that draws you to it? Or why certain colors are always used in similar ways? Now we are going to explore the meanings behind the colors we love and hate.
Purple is perceived as regal or royal. It gives you a sense of nobility and spirituality. Additionally, the color purple can conjure creativity but only in moderation. Too much purple can cause frustration and feelings of unease. Use purple as small pops of color here and there and leave it a that.
Shades of blue are considered the most loved colors in the world. This could be linked to the fact that our beautiful wide-open sky or bodies of water that surround us are blue. On the other hand, it could be because the color blue solicits a sense of calm and protection.
In contrast, certain shades of blue, however, can cause us to feel sad or cold. Being aware of the shade and how it affects us is important. You don’t want to surround yourself with a color that will devastate all your self-care efforts.
We associate the color green with health, prosperity, and wellness. Therefore, green would be an excellent color to surround yourself with when working on your well-being. Use green in areas where you want to relax and feel a sense of contentment.
The color yellow is associated with feelings of happiness, warmth, and hope. As well as to indicate warnings and to grab one’s attention. Bringing some yellow can only coax positivity and happiness into your life.
Often times the color orange can give you a sense of balance. So use orange in times when you can use a boost of energy and to make your space feel welcoming.
Red is the most captivating of all the colors. It commands attention. It symbolizes love and hate and should be used in moderation. Small tidbits of red here and there is all you need.
The color pink represents a feeling of femininity and romance. Bright pinks can be playful and fun. Therefore choose your shade of pink depending on the mood you’re seeking.
Black is perceived differently in different cultures. Firstly, some associate it with mourning and death. Secondly, others see it as powerful and elegant. Whichever feeling it invokes in you, black should be used as an accent color rather than in large quantities.
Many people believe white is a symbol of cleanliness and purity, but some feel it represents coldness and sterility. It is a great backdrop to add splashes of color to or in larger quantities if you’re looking for a sense of freshness.
